Year-Round Parasite Control

While you may be aware that the prevalence of intestinal parasites in your pet may be low, about 5%, or one in every 20 pets, recent studies show that the seroprevalence of zoonotic Toxocara spp. infection in humans over the age of 6 years in the United States is approximately 14%, more than 1 in every 7 people.

Most dog owners are aware of the danger of heartworms.  However, most cat owners are unaware that their cats are also at risk of contracting heartworms with a higher incidence in indoor-only cats.  Yet, our hospital has diagnosed 25 pets with heartworms in the past 12 months, about one in every 60 pets tested.  Many others pets are not tested, especially cats as cats are not required to be tested before being placed on heartworm prevention.  It is expected that the incidence of heartworm disease will increase due to the increased dispersion of mosquitoe species, including the introduction of new species, an increase in wild reservoir hosts, the movement of heartworm positive dogs around the country and climate changes that favor the increase in mosquito populations and the development of heartworm larva in those mosquitoes.

Those of us in Florida know that fleas are a major concern to pet owners.  We also understand that fleas can be found in the home year-round, but that we also get dramatic increases in flea populations at various times of the year.  Many of these flea population explosions are a result of sporadic treatment for fleas which leaves a few breeding adult fleas that can lay hundreds of eggs in a single day that all hatch at the same time when the environment is optimal.

We recommend the year-round administration of monthly, broad-spectrum parasite control for every pet as keeping these parasites in check in your pets not only keeps them healthy, it reduces the exposure to pet owners, their families and their communities.
